Standard eye examinations do not always measure how children can see things. There are many other vision skills that are required in learning to read. The 20 / 20 test fails to evaluate many imporant aspects of normal vision such as: Eye focusing Co ordination Eyes working together as a team - binocular vision Eye movement And...perception of what we see.
There is also colour vision that needs to be considered as well.
Parents and teachers are encouraged to make a comprehensive eye examination part of their preprations for the new term and to look for indications of vision problems that might be contributing to the leanring challenges of thier children, such as
Frequent loss of place when reading
Confusing similar words
Complaints of eyes hurting or headaches after reading
Poor understbnaidng
Sloppy handwriting
